Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

A hair-strengthening vitamin that reduces beard breakage and supports thicker, shinier growth.

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is essential for hair structure. Topical application — usually via panthenol, its precursor — measurably strengthens the hair shaft and adds shine within 2–4 weeks of consistent use. In beard conditioner and premium shampoo, B5 is one of the few actives with clinical hair-benefit evidence.

History & Origin

Pantothenic acid — vitamin B5 — was identified in the 1930s and named from the Greek pantothen, 'from everywhere,' because it occurs in nearly all foods. It is a precursor to coenzyme A, central to fat metabolism. In grooming it matters mostly through its stable cosmetic derivative, panthenol, which the skin converts to B5 after application.

Uses & Benefits

  • ›Supports the metabolism that keeps skin barrier lipids functioning
  • ›Deficiency is extremely rare, so supplementation is seldom useful
  • ›Applied topically as panthenol for hydration and hair flexibility
  • ›Present in eggs, meat, whole grains, avocado, and most everyday foods
  • ›Often marketed in hair supplements with thin evidence for that claim

Safety & Sourcing

Dietary B5 is safe and deficiency is almost unknown outside of severe malnutrition. Very high oral doses can cause digestive upset. Topical panthenol is well tolerated and among the least irritating humectants in cosmetics.

FAQ

Does vitamin B5 help hair growth?+

There is no good evidence that supplementing B5 grows hair in someone who is not deficient, and deficiency is very rare.

What is the difference between B5 and panthenol?+

Panthenol is the stable alcohol form used in cosmetics; skin and hair convert it into B5.

Should I take a B5 supplement for my beard?+

Almost certainly not. Get it from food and spend the money on care products you will use.
