Vitamin A (Retinol)
The gold standard of skincare actives — accelerates cell turnover and reduces visible aging.
Vitamin A, in its topical form as retinol, is the most-researched anti-aging ingredient in dermatology. In men's grooming, retinol serums are the go-to nighttime product for reducing fine lines, fading sun damage, and softening the deep creases that come from squinting outdoors.

History & Origin
Vitamin A, isolated in 1913, was the first vitamin discovered — and its derivatives became the most important class of topical skin actives after tretinoin was approved for acne in 1971. In grooming it appears in two very different forms: as a nutrient that supports skin and hair cell turnover from the inside, and as topical retinoids that accelerate turnover from the outside.
Uses & Benefits
- ›Supports normal cell turnover in skin and follicles
- ›Topical retinoids treat acne and photoaging with strong evidence behind them
- ›Present naturally in rosehip seed oil at mild levels
- ›Deficiency causes dry skin and hair, though deficiency is rare in well-fed populations
- ›Often paired with moisturizers to offset the dryness retinoids cause
Safety & Sourcing
Topical retinoids cause dryness, peeling, and increased sun sensitivity, especially in the first weeks, and require daily sunscreen. Oral vitamin A is fat-soluble and genuinely toxic in excess — high-dose supplementation can cause hair loss, liver damage, and birth defects. Never megadose vitamin A for hair; get it from diet unless a doctor prescribes otherwise.
FAQ
Can I use a retinoid under a beard?+
Yes, but expect flaking at the beard line early on. Apply to clean dry skin, moisturize after, and use sunscreen daily.
Does vitamin A grow a beard?+
No. Excess can actually cause hair shedding.
Is retinol safe with beard oil?+
Apply the retinoid first to skin, let it absorb, then oil the beard. Layering oil underneath reduces penetration.
