Mustache Styles Guide: Big, Small, And How To Groom Every One

The Grizzly EditorsPublished: Updated: 7 min read
TL;DR
  • Every mustache style is a combination of three choices: length, width, and whether the ends are trained.
  • Chevron is the default that suits most faces; handlebar needs 6+ months of growth and wax.
  • Trim with the mustache combed straight down, using scissors, a hair at a time.
  • Keep the top lip clear — hair over the lip line ages the whole face.
  • Wax is for hold and training. Balm is for softness. They are not interchangeable.

A mustache is the most visible part of any beard and the part most men groom least. Getting it right takes one good trim technique, the right product, and knowing which shape your face and growth pattern can actually support.

The classic styles

  • Chevron — full, angled down to the lip corners, no styling required. The most universally flattering shape.
  • Handlebar — long enough to train outward and curl. Needs six months of growth and daily wax.
  • Walrus — long, thick, hanging over the top lip. Requires dense growth and regular length control.
  • Horseshoe — chevron with the sides extended down to the jaw. Bold, high commitment.
  • Pencil — thin line above the lip. Precise, needs shaving every day or two.
  • English — narrow, waxed and extended outward with the ends left straight rather than curled.
  • Imperial — grown upward and outward across the cheeks. Heavy wax, heavy maintenance.

Choosing by face and growth

Wide faces carry a fuller chevron or horseshoe. Narrow faces are better served by something that does not extend far past the mouth. If your mustache grows sparse in the middle under the nose — a very common pattern — grow the length longer and comb from the centre outward so the fuller edges cover the gap.

How to trim a mustache properly

  • Do it dry. Wet hair sits longer than it cuts.
  • Comb the whole mustache straight down over the lip.
  • Use scissors, not clippers, for the lip line — cut a small amount at a time, following the natural curve of your lip.
  • Thin bulk from underneath rather than shortening the top, so the shape holds.
  • Trim every 5 to 7 days. A mustache goes from sharp to shaggy faster than the rest of the beard.

Wax versus balm

Mustache wax is a firm beeswax-based hold product for training and shaping — essential for handlebars and English styles, unnecessary for a chevron. Balm conditions and gives light control. Warm wax between your fingers before applying, work it from the centre outward, then shape the ends last.

Everyday mustache care

Wash it when you wash your beard, oil it daily along with everything else, comb it after every application, and rinse it after meals — a mustache picks up more than the rest of your face and it is the fastest route to beard smell.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest mustache style to maintain?+

The chevron. It requires no wax and no daily training — just a weekly trim along the lip line and the same oil you already use on your beard.

How long does it take to grow a handlebar mustache?+

Around six months for enough length to train the ends into a curl, and daily wax throughout to teach the hair which direction to sit.

Should I trim a mustache wet or dry?+

Dry, and combed straight down over the lip. Wet hair hangs longer than it will once dry, which is how men accidentally cut a mustache far too short.

What is the difference between mustache wax and beard balm?+

Wax is a firm beeswax product for hold and training. Balm is a softer conditioning product with light control. Handlebars need wax; a chevron only needs balm or oil.

How do I fix a sparse patch under my nose?+

Grow more length and comb outward from the centre so the fuller edges fall across the gap. Most middle sparseness is invisible once there is length to work with.

"The step-by-step here made it stupid simple. Ordered the bundle, four weeks in the compliments haven't stopped."
