History & Origin
Before industrial solvent extraction, all plant oils were pressed mechanically — the hydraulic press dates to the 18th century, and screw presses to the 19th. 'Cold-pressed' now specifies mechanical extraction kept below a temperature threshold, generally around 49 degrees Celsius, so heat-sensitive compounds survive. It is one of the few label terms on a grooming product that reliably tells you something about quality.

Safety & Sourcing
Cold-pressed oils are safe and generally preferable for grooming use, with one practical trade-off: because they retain more reactive compounds, they oxidize faster than refined oils. Buy sizes you will finish, store away from heat and sunlight, and replace anything that smells rancid. Culinary grades are not always suitable for cosmetics — roasted argan, for instance, is a food product.

Is cold-pressed actually better?+
For grooming oils, yes — it retains antioxidants and avoids solvent residues. The trade-off is a shorter shelf life.

Does cold-pressed mean unrefined?+
