Sulfate-free means a wash product uses gentler surfactants instead of sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. These milder cleansers (coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, cocamidopropyl betaine) clean effectively without stripping the skin's acid mantle or fading beard color.

History & Origin
Sulfate-free cleansing became mainstream in the 2000s, first in curly-hair and color-care ranges, then across men's grooming as beard products matured. The category is defined by what replaces the sulfates: mild amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants such as cocamidopropyl betaine, coco-glucoside, and sodium cocoyl isethionate, which clean with far less lipid stripping.
