How Heat Straightening Actually Works

Keratin's shape is held partly by hydrogen bonds, which are weak and water-sensitive, and partly by disulfide bonds, which are strong and permanent. Heat and moisture break the hydrogen bonds; as the hair cools in a new position, they reform in that new arrangement. That is why the effect lasts until the next shower and why humidity reverses it in an afternoon.

Disulfide bonds are what chemical straightening breaks, and they do not come back. Heat above roughly 200°C starts to affect them and to denature the keratin outright, which produces permanent, irreversible damage — bubbled cuticles, weak points along the shaft, and eventual snapping.

The narrow safe zone is the whole story. Below about 150°C the straightener does not have enough energy to reshape coarse beard hair; above 200°C it damages it. Any device without adjustable temperature is a device you cannot use safely on a beard.

Doing It Without Wrecking Your Beard

Never use it on a wet or even damp beard. Water inside the shaft turns to steam under a hot plate and forces the cuticle open from the inside — the damage is visible under magnification as bubbles along the shaft, and it is permanent. Dry fully first, ideally on a cool blow dryer setting.
