Beard Lengths Explained: From Stubble To Yeard And Everything Between

The Grizzly EditorsPublished: Updated: 5 min read
TL;DR
  • Stubble = 1–5mm (guard 0.5–2). Short beard = 5–12mm (guard 2–4). Medium = 12–25mm (guard 4–8).
  • Full beard starts at roughly 1 inch (25mm) — anything shorter is technically a short beard.
  • 'Yeard' = one year of unrestricted growth. Most men max out at 6–12 inches (their genetic terminal length).
  • Barbers speak in guard numbers, not millimeters. A '4' is 12–13mm. Print a guide before your appointment.

Every barber knows what a #3 is on their clippers. Every man asking for a #3 thinks he knows what he's asking for. These are rarely the same beard. Here's the actual reference, in millimeters, with what each stage looks like and needs.

0–5mm: Stubble

Guard #0.5 (1.5mm) to #2 (6mm). Reads as intentional facial hair, not a beard. Maintenance is a clipper every 2–4 days at the exact same guard. No oils needed at 1–3mm; from 4mm up, one drop of oil for the skin. This is the highest-effort length in terms of frequency, lowest in terms of product.

5–12mm: Short beard

Guard #2 (6mm) to #4 (12mm). Corporate beard territory — clearly a beard, still tidy, works in almost any professional setting. Trim weekly to maintain the same length across the face. Oil daily, light balm on days you want more shape.

12–25mm: Medium beard

Guard #4 (12mm) to #8 (25mm). The 'you have a beard' beard. Shape becomes as important as length — cheek line and neckline need real maintenance every 10–14 days. Oil daily, balm most days, butter twice weekly. This is where most men land long-term because it looks intentional without requiring the lifestyle of a full beard.

25–75mm (1–3 inches): Full beard

Beyond clipper guards — you're using scissors or a barber's expertise. Full beard territory, adds visible weight to the face, requires the full oil/balm/butter ritual plus a boar bristle brush. Trim every 4–8 weeks for shape, not length. Sleep habits (satin pillowcase) start to matter.

75–150mm (3–6 inches): Long beard

Requires commitment — 10 minutes daily minimum, specific sleep setup, and a real trimming ritual. Butter becomes essential, not optional. Split ends need active management. This length turns heads intentionally and is a lifestyle, not a haircut.

Yeard, 2-year, terminal length

'Yeard' = 12 months of unrestricted growth from a clean-shaven start. Most men reach 4–6 inches. 'Terminal length' is where the beard stops getting longer because hairs reach their genetic maximum and fall out to be replaced — usually 6–12 inches, hit around the 2–4 year mark for most men.

Barber shorthand cheat sheet

Guard #1 = 3mm, #2 = 6mm, #3 = 9mm, #4 = 12mm, #5 = 15mm, #6 = 19mm, #7 = 22mm, #8 = 25mm. Length varies slightly by clipper brand, but this is the standard. When in doubt, take a photo of the length you want to your barber — labels are unreliable but pictures aren't.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to grow through each stage?+

Beards grow about 12mm per month on average. So stubble to short beard: 2 weeks. Short to medium: 4–6 weeks. Medium to full beard: 6–8 weeks. Full beard to long: 3–4 months. Yeard to terminal length: 1–3 more years.

Why does my beard look shorter than my friend's at the same length?+

Density and curl pattern. A dense straight beard at 25mm looks like 25mm. A curly medium-density beard at 25mm can look like 15mm because the coils shorten visible length by 30–40%. Length in a photo is not what's on the ruler for curly beards.

Should I ask for length in mm or guard number at the barber?+

Guard number, always. Barbers work in guards. If you know you want 6mm, ask for a #2. If you want 12mm, ask for a #4. Saying 'about half an inch' opens the door to interpretation errors.

Can I skip stages and go straight to long?+

You have to grow through every stage in order — there's no skipping. What you can do is minimize maintenance during the awkward stages (weeks 2–8) so you get to the length you want faster without over-trimming.
