A quick walk-through of the tactics in this guide.
Balm has three jobs: seal in moisture, shield against wind and cold, and provide light shape. It doesn't replace oil — it layers on top.
- 1
Scrape, don't scoop
Use your thumbnail to peel a thin layer off the tin. Less than you think — a dime for average beards, a nickel for longer.
- 2
Emulsify in your palms
Rub palms together for 10 seconds until the balm goes clear and thin. If it's still white and pasty, keep going.
- 3
Root to tip, both sides
Press palms into the beard from underneath first, then rake outward through the hair. Both sides of the face, then chin, then mustache.
- 4
Shape with a brush or comb
Comb sets the direction; a boar-bristle brush polishes and distributes. Do the mustache last with a small mustache comb.
