How to Fix Beardruff

The white flakes in a dark beard are almost always fixable in under two weeks.

4 min read Expert Reviewed
Quick Answer

Beardruff is dry, flaking skin under the beard, caused by over-washing, harsh soap, or under-moisturizing. Fix it in three steps: switch to a sulfate-free beard wash used only 2–3× per week, oil daily into the skin (not the hair), and stop washing your beard with body bar soap. Most men see it clear in 10–14 days.

Beardruff isn't a hair problem — it's a skin problem hiding under hair. The skin under your beard has the same needs as the skin on your face, but usually gets treated like scalp.

  1. 1

Stop using body soap on your beard

Bar soaps and body washes strip sebum. Under a beard, that sebum is doing double duty — hair and skin both — and its absence shows up as flakes in days.

  2. 2

Switch to a gentle beard wash 2–3× per week

A sulfate-free wash cleans without stripping. Daily is too much for almost every skin type.

  3. 3

    Oil daily, into the skin

Right after washing while the beard is still damp. Massage oil into skin — the flakes come from skin, so the fix goes to skin.

  4. 4

    Give it 10–14 days

Skin cell turnover is on a two-week cycle. Don't panic-switch products at day 3.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes beard dandruff?
Dry skin under the beard, almost always from over-washing, using harsh soap, or living in dry air. The yeast species linked to scalp dandruff can play a role in severe cases, but 90% of beardruff is just dry skin.
Can I use scalp dandruff shampoo on my beard?
Occasionally, for stubborn cases. It's harsh, so not daily — once a week at most, followed immediately by a beard oil.
Does beard oil cause dandruff?
No — quality oils prevent it. If a product seems to make flakes worse, the issue is usually a fragrance-heavy or synthetic oil, not oil in general.
